A filling is recommended when decay or damage has created a cavity that the tooth cannot repair on its own. The earlier a cavity is treated, the smaller the filling usually is.
Signs a filling may be needed
- Sensitivity to sweet foods or temperature
- A dark spot or visible hole
- Food catching in one place
- A rough edge you can feel
Some early decay can be managed with prevention alone. Your dentist will explain whether a filling is needed after examining the tooth.
