Root canal treatment treats infection or inflammation of the pulp, the soft tissue inside a tooth. Catching the problem early can make treatment simpler and helps save the natural tooth.
Common warning signs
- Toothache that lasts, or pain when you bite down
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the food or drink is gone
- Swelling or tenderness in the gum near one tooth
- A small pimple-like bump on the gum
- A tooth that has turned darker than its neighbours
Sometimes there are no symptoms
An infected tooth does not always hurt. Some problems are only found on an X-ray during a routine check-up, which is one reason regular visits matter.
What to do next
These signs have other possible causes, so they do not mean you definitely need a root canal. Book an assessment. The dentist will examine the tooth, explain what is happening and discuss your options.
If you have facial swelling, fever or swelling that affects swallowing or breathing, seek urgent care straight away.
