Dental Treatment FAQs
Answers to questions we are often asked. Every mouth is different, so your dentist will give advice specific to you.
How often should I visit the dentist?
Many people are advised to have a check-up about every six months, but the right interval depends on your oral health. Your dentist will recommend a schedule after examining you.
What happens during my first dental consultation?
We ask about your medical and dental history and any concerns, examine your teeth, gums and mouth, and explain what we find. If treatment is needed, we discuss your options before anything is done.
How often should I have scaling and polishing?
Many patients benefit from a professional clean every six months. Some need it more often, for example if tartar builds up quickly or gums bleed easily.
Does root canal treatment hurt?
Root canal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so most patients feel little during the procedure. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
When might a tooth need to be extracted?
Extraction may be recommended when a tooth is too damaged to repair, very loose, or causing problems for surrounding teeth. The dentist will explain the reasons and any alternatives first.
What options may be available for replacing a missing tooth?
It depends on the number of missing teeth, the health of the surrounding teeth and gums, and your preferences. The team will explain the options offered at the clinic after an assessment.
When should someone consider orthodontic treatment?
Children are often assessed as their adult teeth come through, but adults can benefit too. An orthodontic consultation shows whether treatment is suitable.
In Pain or Had an Accident?
Contact the clinic as soon as possible if you have severe toothache, a knocked-out or broken tooth, swelling, or bleeding that will not stop. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown (not the root), keep it moist in milk and get to a dentist quickly.
Go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately if you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, a high fever with facial swelling, or a serious facial injury.
Clinic hours: Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Outside these hours, please go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
